LISTS: The Top Ten Most Ignorant Moments In Hip-Hop History

Posted by: Cliff Po | Comments
Tagged in: UDTV

Surprisingly this moment didn’t make the list…

Yesterday evening Lupe Fiasco released his new single Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free) which samples the classic T.R.O.Y. , a CL Smooth and Pete Rock creation. A common enough practice in this day and age, taking a classic and making your own version of it. Problem is Lupe never informed Pete Rock of the decision to use the track, thus setting off a firestorm on Twitter yesterday as Pete attacked Lupe, the producer, and the label for soiling the memory of one of Hip-Hops most revered songs.
While this wasn’t a completely ignorant moment it got us thinking about what is Hip-Hop’s most ridiculous moments in time, and without further ado we present…

10. Ol Dirty Bastard Interrupts Grammys To Say “Wu-Tang Is For The Children”

Looking back at this moment it’s more notable for the fact that the people he interrupted won song of the year in the first place. I watched this video three times writing this and I have no idea who ODB gave the shock of their lives to. Someone needs to dig them up for one of those VH1 specials and ask them what their memory of this classic piece of Wu Tang trivia means to them.

9. MC Hammer Pop, Locks, & Drops It For Kentucky Fried Chicken

It’s not nearly that bad a commercial until Hammer twists his neck around in a sick twist of “Giiiiiiiiirl” right before dropping the last piece of popcorn chicken in his mouth like a true fiend. In the porn industry this is what they call a money shot and I’m thinking that for the executives at KFC it was pretty much the same thing. Once again can someone dig up my man with the what in gawds name did you do with your hair for another of these specials?

8. Professor Griff Says “Jews Responsible For Majority Of Wickedness In The World”

The best thing for you to do would be to finish reading this list, then check out this story on this incident, which many have attributed to being the start of the ending for Public Enemy. Professor Griff basically turned PE from being magical revolutionary negroes to a bunch of effing n-words with these statements and from there the proverbial smack down was layeth upon them with righteous and furious anger. Kicking Griff out of the group slightly helped them in the public eye, but their main fan base took it as a sign of weakness and corporate boot licking.

7. Lil B’s Threatening to Fuck Kanye, Dressing As A Woman, Speaking at NYU , Career

Lil B has managed to make an entire career out of completely ignorant statements, fashion statements, and general malarkey to the point that I could make an entire list out of his antics and yet he doesn’t even have an album that has sold more than a hundred thousand copies. While the above statement is perhaps one of his finest, I think the fact that he scored speaking engagements at accredited and acclaimed Universities is worthy of high praise indeed. Based Gawd you may indeed have sex with my female dog whenever the time allows.

6. Nelly & The Tip Drill video BET Uncut

Yet another entry in the line of “I could make an entire list off of this one entry”, BET Uncut’s run was legendary. If only Twitter had existed back then some of the people whose videos were featured might still have a career. White Casey I’m looking at you. But nothing set off the firestorm like Nelly swiping his Black card between some black butt cheeks. It was as if Nelly was suddenly responsible for every reprenhsible act done to womankind since the beginning of time, but nothing compared to the next contestant.

5. Too Short tells kids a little bit of voila… Magic

“A lot of the boys are going to be running around trying to get kisses from the girls, we’re going way past that. I’m taking you to the hole… This is what you do. You push her up against the wall or pull her up against you while you lean on the wall and you take your finger and put a little spit on it and you stick your finger in her underwear and you rub it on there and watch what happens. It’s like magic.”

Now the video above isn’t from the incident in question, but since XXL wisely has pulled the offending material it’s tough to find these days. Anyway long story short XXL magazine asked Too Short to give some dating advice for the kids on Valentines Day. The quote above is what happens when you ask a notoriously foul mouthed artist to give relationship advice to children. Who is the ignorant one in this situation though? XXL or Short? Short was just doing what he always does, and XXL should have known that he would bring them this type of content. Anyway moving on…

5. Cam’ron Tells Bill O Reilly “You Mad?”

I really wanted to put this one at number one, as it’s definitely one of my favorite moments in television history. Bill O’Reilly brought Cam’ron and Dame Dash on his show to discuss the influence of Hip-Hop lyrics on the youth, and Cam basically takes him to school refuting his arguments to the point where Bill appears to get exasperated, thus unleashing the classic “You Mad?” phrase which has ended many an internet argument.

4. Kanye West Says “George Bush Doesn’t Care About Black People”

Ahh Kanye, I could probably make a list of your own top ten ignorant moments in Hip-Hop all by your lonesome. It was definitely tough picking just one, but for the audacity of a rapper calling out the then President Of The United States I had to go with this classic. Mike Myers and Chris Tucker’s reaction shots to Kanye’s outburst tell you all you need to know.

3. V Nasty uses the N Word, Ziggy Azaelia calls herself white slave master runaway or something etc.

“What can I say about V Nasty that hasn’t already been said about Afghanistan? The girl looks bombed out and depleted.” Apologies to Dave Chappelle but how else could I describe the phenomenon of V-Nasty and the white rapper coming completely out of their face? In the last year record labels went on a hunt to find their very own Barbie doll rapper with varying degrees of success. While Ziggy can definitely spit a little bit she got herself into extremely hot water with the “I’m a runaway slave master” line and has since apologized profusely. No such luck for V-Nasty who in the above video actually attempts to defend her use of the word N* while telling people that her album will run 2011. Since it’s now 2012 and not a peep from her has been heard I think it may be safe to assume that her own ignorance will most likely kill her career. Please?

2. Wayne Kissing Baby, Denies Being Gay, Says It’s “Black Mafia Business”

Now we here at PDS believe in equal rights for everyone, and that includes the right to love whoever you want to love. What we don’t endorse is men kissing other men on the mouth and then claiming it’s some Black Mafia business instead of the obvious love peck that it was. Come on Wayne and Baby why deny it? It’s not like anyone ever believed you anyway.

1. Rick Ross Denies Being A Corrections Officer & Then Admits “The Truth Is Far More Sinister”

Look I love Rick Ross’s music. He has consistently put out album after album and managed to improve with each release while also releasing a stream of mixtapes that could have easily been major label albums as well. That being said the whole denying he was a corrections officer and then admitting it while acting as if he was involved in a much bigger scheme is somewhat hilarious. It’s really like the perfect movie, drug dealer becomes C.O. in order to move more weight, somehow doesn’t get arrested, and then moves on to become a super successful artist? All I want to know is can Kenan play him in the upcoming Lifetime TV movie?

Aside from a few tweets here and there, Nicki Minaj has kept relatively quiet regarding the cancellation of her Summer Jam performance yesterday.

Following “disrespectful” comments made about her music by Peter Rosenberg and by Funkmaster Flex, who vowed to tear her down, the Young Money rapper was forced to cancel her performance much to the disappointment of her fans.

Wanting to set the record straight, the rapper called into the Hot 97 studios during Flexmaster Flex’s show and voiced her opinions. Listen to Minaj sound off below!
